We took the open top tourist bus around the city and the eastern suburbs including Bondi Beach, then a ferry to Manly, to see the beautiful views of Sydney Harbour from the sea. Today we're off to visit the Powerhouse Museum and then to the airport for the long journey home. <div><br></div><div>We've had a wonderful holiday here in Oz and will take back many fond memories. </div><div><br></div><div>Hope you enjoyed the blog. With its tropical climate, modern high-rise buildings and newly developed waterfront area, it's a very interesting city and a welcome contrast to the last 3 weeks' rural sights. It's peak season and the annual festival is in full swing, so the place is packed full of Australian and international tourists. We spent the last 3 days wandering around the streets, soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying the great food (being so near to Asia, lots of lovely sushi and noodle restaurants, yum). This evening we did one of Darwin's "must-do's" and went to the Mindil Beach Sunset Market along with 5,000 other people, to shop around the stalls, grab a fruit slushie and sit on the beach to watch the sun go down. Yet another memorable sunset, a theme of this holiday! </div></div><div><br></div><div>Tomorrow we pack away our sandals and shorts and head south to wintry Sydney. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBxvG-KvjgCReryJSQtMSalhRhmJqllVkWDhYtUWbsBHDATRQB8QdQsw8PvjxetWgS3BYD1jww3lzZsSCJ3ykVz8qM20dDMl-JKa9B5DRUG46scQl_HrzSosdH4PvftpQYwUMFitDbU60/s640/blogger-image-636907530.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBxvG-KvjgCReryJSQtMSalhRhmJqllVkWDhYtUWbsBHDATRQB8QdQsw8PvjxetWgS3BYD1jww3lzZsSCJ3ykVz8qM20dDMl-JKa9B5DRUG46scQl_HrzSosdH4PvftpQYwUMFitDbU60/s640/blogger-image-636907530.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPHj2b30waJTN5Z-zBUovKj3bZMkcx8A3led8gL8uVcS4AwS2cPdf2E5N0IdWoXse0fSmAfftRS4B4NrIfNNJNMek1X8f6iX_8SKBe1QeCERncjxe0xtGCHAmdz7dWUPVrIc1z947FO-U/s640/blogger-image-774720096.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPHj2b30waJTN5Z-zBUovKj3bZMkcx8A3led8gL8uVcS4AwS2cPdf2E5N0IdWoXse0fSmAfftRS4B4NrIfNNJNMek1X8f6iX_8SKBe1QeCERncjxe0xtGCHAmdz7dWUPVrIc1z947FO-U/s640/blogger-image-774720096.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">At Crocosaurus Cove</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbWkEuU37H5RnFrQ9sm-wIV3op7b9h_4Pktpanq5nu_FPGoGotl120PXKhHwwu3-IBgrh_wRdjaeHTEdxrHFA8Dnu7t2tH4IZidug8JSaCY30Zf99lNR7atzPxm_8S__XjOW0vnVxKEGo/s640/blogger-image-945209251.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbWkEuU37H5RnFrQ9sm-wIV3op7b9h_4Pktpanq5nu_FPGoGotl120PXKhHwwu3-IBgrh_wRdjaeHTEdxrHFA8Dnu7t2tH4IZidug8JSaCY30Zf99lNR7atzPxm_8S__XjOW0vnVxKEGo/s640/blogger-image-945209251.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc5EXe5pAHImPgiks94JKSXIG89kwtSCC2aSu6BUMnQO2C2ebMbazTacQAYmpU5R_zaUKYldhAq1Bn3K4TvD2fygW4KQyt8Nyq1D6grfsTnnVX1kDc45gYqV76-66BPvp3DV0AN4_4qHQ/s640/blogger-image-1470647025.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc5EXe5pAHImPgiks94JKSXIG89kwtSCC2aSu6BUMnQO2C2ebMbazTacQAYmpU5R_zaUKYldhAq1Bn3K4TvD2fygW4KQyt8Nyq1D6grfsTnnVX1kDc45gYqV76-66BPvp3DV0AN4_4qHQ/s640/blogger-image-1470647025.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">$160 gets you a "meet and greet" with Chopper in the Cage of Death. Made a note of that for next time. <div><br></div><div>Driving alongside the Victoria River, we spent the night at a roadhouse campsite and continued the next day to Katherine, where we stocked up at the supermarket, before completing the day at Edith Falls. A hot tip from some fellow travellers, it was a simple campsite set in beautiful woodland, only a stone's throw from the falls and a refreshing plunge pool below. Bearing in mind the crocodile disclaimer by the pool, we went for a very short dip huddled closely together behind Ruby. </div><div><br></div><div>At this point, we passed the 5,000 km mark and have Darwin in our sights. 2 nights in Litchfield National Park before the 100 km home run tomorrow. Litchfield being within easy day-tripper distance from Darwin, we suddenly found ourselves in a holiday hotspot, jostling for parking spaces and shady spots by the watering holes. But we could see why it's so popular with the locals, the park is easily accessible with a 2wd and is full of interesting viewpoints and wildlife. </div><div><br></div><div>And so to the final evening of our road trip, what were the highlights of this 24-day journey? The Pinnacles, the dolphin feeding and catamaran sailing in Monkey Mia, the snorkelling in Coral Bay, "Fingers" Mitchell Cullen and his didgeridoos, camel riding in Broome and especially for Hannah and Ruby, holding a baby kangaroo. But also the whole camping experience has been great. So many interesting chats around the barbie, characterful campsite wardens who clearly love their job, peaceful nights and melodic dawn choruses. The long drives were rarely dull, with the scenery being so different from what we're used to. Hannah and Ruby coped admirably, by reading, drawing or listening to music. Eating out was a bit hit-and-miss but we kept that to a minimum and mostly cooked for ourselves, which was obviously of the highest standard :)</div><div><br></div><div>See you in Darwin. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmo5uCe66iaR3cMbPcKkd_5ByQKJx6Ez3w59pYdXLuNiwgwEhf3nTkH3I8khx5V_0JzaOOzWK2GEHshQJYBvMJHMeKNYpWH7kudf40eicBvT21J3zFabYG8X7Hd2YGnvXPwcuOBpt6O6o/s640/blogger-image--837972969.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; We're camped right next to the local lake of the same name and the place is buzzing with wildlife. Trips to the "ablutions" (as they politely call toilets here) have become mini-safaris, with toads, geckos, large spiders and even a snake being spotted in and around the facilities. <div><br></div><div>We took a 2km walk into the local town to find most places either closed or closing (it was 11.30am). It's a Sunday, but up until now shops have been open just like any other day. So after finding a cafe which was open and having some delicious mango smoothies, we headed back via the Celebrity Tree Park for some bird spotting and Boab tree hugging. </div><div><div><br></div><div>Quote from Ruby on the way back to the campsite (it was very hot by now) "I'm as thirsty as a monkey carrying bananas". No idea where that came from. </div></div><div><br></div><div>Tomorrow we cross the border into the Northern Territory, where the time is 1.5 hours ahead of Western Australia. There are strict controls on fruit and vegetable movements between states, to protect crops against pests and diseases, <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">so we've had to run down our fruit and veg supplies. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUr_YT-npkA8J8wTc7x2qsJTNZ9vJDShALQpr30PjWnP-n2ljfhouffKqRUG8HR3co3ZrfZ6fsAcv7d_r9c5ZHYzpx-O3qBW-97L9yjWiWa0hOGs1cEZrC18n8FFpZZC_CSHFEBEgZAQM/s640/blogger-image--603203883.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUr_YT-npkA8J8wTc7x2qsJTNZ9vJDShALQpr30PjWnP-n2ljfhouffKqRUG8HR3co3ZrfZ6fsAcv7d_r9c5ZHYzpx-O3qBW-97L9yjWiWa0hOGs1cEZrC18n8FFpZZC_CSHFEBEgZAQM/s640/blogger-image--603203883.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">A blue winged Kookaburra (very nicely taken by Hannah) </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxVjngdMRzii5KD8qHSOZYUeWzLX9-yf_4ADFlG29kMhvmiAP2SpvA6wwT6kur5jzotRqjfX0oR3LwbIorvsJkgJZbfh0xIfo26uzikPLtE_EfpTBQvxx2zG8g91lHPBY2ToZysqfFzns/s640/blogger-image-228312818.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxVjngdMRzii5KD8qHSOZYUeWzLX9-yf_4ADFlG29kMhvmiAP2SpvA6wwT6kur5jzotRqjfX0oR3LwbIorvsJkgJZbfh0xIfo26uzikPLtE_EfpTBQvxx2zG8g91lHPBY2ToZysqfFzns/s640/blogger-image-228312818.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Hugging a Boab, "the tree that God planted upside down"</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVOFcgAX0cDLfkvLUDIhSPlfw7k245njjcAIYGf9IMxsoRiUH7FnMHVt3twX2ih0JqR35KRuDLz1mSVhxFiYIL2Rkd5LRsuH6QargnvHWJwGher6-RGzNiABQLG8-goY0vFHl2E9FO8PI/s640/blogger-image--409904860.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVOFcgAX0cDLfkvLUDIhSPlfw7k245njjcAIYGf9IMxsoRiUH7FnMHVt3twX2ih0JqR35KRuDLz1mSVhxFiYIL2Rkd5LRsuH6QargnvHWJwGher6-RGzNiABQLG8-goY0vFHl2E9FO8PI/s640/blogger-image--409904860.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Swimming pool at our campsite</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div><br></span></div>Fowler Camping Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13717945451988708760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-798468118341438173.post-65079448909854141582014-08-02T11:36:00.001+02:002014-08-02T17:10:27.403+02:00From Halls Creek to Kununurra via Wyndham<div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Obviously, wise travellers we are not (see entry from 31/07). After the treat at Fitzroy Crossing we came back down to earth with a bump at Halls Creek. What we saw of the small town was fine, but the "grim, dusty" caravan park resembled a breakers yard. Still, it was our home for the night and we made the most of it, but left early the next morning (8am, a record for us!). </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif">We're getting into the routine of driving here after over 2 weeks on the road. Refuelling occurs whenever you see a petrol station and not when the tank is nearly empty. I</font><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">nitial over-enthusiastic waves to passing camper vans has become a slightly raised 1 finger salute. Covering around 300km a day, the roads are good and there's very little traffic. What's striking is that you hardly ever pass through any kind of settlement en-route to the next destination. It's pure bush land, with the occasional homestead or farm signposted way up some dirt track. There are small herds of cattle scattered about and plenty of scavenger birds feasting on the road kill, but otherwise not much wildlife to be seen during the day. We were warned not to drive before dawn or after dusk because that's when the bush springs to life and animals can jump out onto the road. The numerous dead kangaroos and cows along the roadside are testament to that. </span></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><br></font></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif">Shortly before Kununurra, we took a detour to Wyndham, the most northerly town in Western Australia. Lunch was at the Rusty Shed Cafe, which really was a rusty shed, with great food: barramundi burgers, spinach and hash brown wraps and croque monsieurs, followed by trifle with green jelly. Then a steep climb to the Five Rivers Lookout for a breathtaking view over the Cambridge Gulf and the 5 rivers which converge here. We drove a small portion of that (around 120km) to Windjana Gorge to admire the views. We saw plenty of freshwater crocodiles basking in the pools along the gorge walk. They're apparently not as aggressive as their saltwater cousins, but we kept our distance all the same. This region is also known for its Boab trees, which were dotted along the route. Some Boabs are over 1500 years old and each one seems to have a character and personality of its own. </div><div><br></div><div>A tiring day, but a great first glimpse of the Kimberley and some white knuckle off-road driving. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYN94-Y1Uco-PH7ABYKV2-BKoU_EAKo1zT9cxnBiwc3SXC2okapjPDFUe9uNHisxNmeDjrJ5-d6MOa51duZnv-c6bp5Om9VqYRWdQ1VPTlIoOVMVxi3WAFJztP6cVfaJT6QfXTZ3nlYWg/s640/blogger-image--285603191.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; We've jumped seasons from 'winter' (warm days and chilly nights) to the tropical 'dry' season of the north end - a humid 30c during the day and not much cooler in the night. It's quite a dramatic change. Our campsite is full of Melbournian and Sydneysider pensioners escaping their cold winters. Those we spoke to have been here for months and are slowly thinking about making their way home. Yesterday there was a 'Christmas in July' party, complete with turkey and balloons. Wacky.<div><br></div><div>Broome flourished during the "pearl rush" of the 1880s and by 1910 was producing 80% of the world's pearl shell. The town is full of pearl showrooms and interesting museums and exhibitions on the subject. It's also famous for Cable Beach, 22km of white sand and turquoise sea. So it's not really the place to hang around if you're a tourist. It was however very useful for stocking up on goodies and cheap diesel before heading out into the wilderness again. <div><br></div><div>Winding our way further along the North West Highway, we passed Port Hedland, another industrial town, known for its salt works. Taking a tip <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">from some fellow campers, we decided to stay at Eighty Mile Beach. And what a tip that was! A real gem of a place, hidden away at the end of a 10km bone-rattling dirt track. We arrived just in time for sunset. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCDtiQ2AJcNWdL9YUZxzQ2VxiBqc6eI2Pu7b0VCOI3nh_QzqXo6ikpVkzLT2Sy_nYYkl8M44cGKICRCc-RadI0B_0d87kFPs_oGWAZQspMPNTSExoSgLvelZnfa-_bPweKxeVXgxClVvs/s640/blogger-image-723125513.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCDtiQ2AJcNWdL9YUZxzQ2VxiBqc6eI2Pu7b0VCOI3nh_QzqXo6ikpVkzLT2Sy_nYYkl8M44cGKICRCc-RadI0B_0d87kFPs_oGWAZQspMPNTSExoSgLvelZnfa-_bPweKxeVXgxClVvs/s640/blogger-image-723125513.jpg"></a></div><br></span></div><div>The dirt track, also known as an unsealed road</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqZQd9ERC4_t4xRu7VJbEf6h8l7mmmbVRQ9bY1h3FuXA9RUXx5JzmoyGEch43qUdN1pV5FJ5bIrLHevq3osSA61N7bQ5gvkmpWHKLZkWq-x0Bl93FEdS-y9iHTzKaxSlnPBNk5_nkdN-A/s640/blogger-image--693516420.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqZQd9ERC4_t4xRu7VJbEf6h8l7mmmbVRQ9bY1h3FuXA9RUXx5JzmoyGEch43qUdN1pV5FJ5bIrLHevq3osSA61N7bQ5gvkmpWHKLZkWq-x0Bl93FEdS-y9iHTzKaxSlnPBNk5_nkdN-A/s640/blogger-image--693516420.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The beach</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWjFxY4LqlXI2YfG7DCY1SyoiTGyovIo5zIruT4_oxC80yUIyw5uBar46DbIyow0vXesq8_HxYRDbWFhuW5B1UcuDx9RmZP_HEwwiTvmfgNt3dYiFdOpvUIZh0q52QyVHKiffBbb_uD3o/s640/blogger-image--826909574.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWjFxY4LqlXI2YfG7DCY1SyoiTGyovIo5zIruT4_oxC80yUIyw5uBar46DbIyow0vXesq8_HxYRDbWFhuW5B1UcuDx9RmZP_HEwwiTvmfgNt3dYiFdOpvUIZh0q52QyVHKiffBbb_uD3o/s640/blogger-image--826909574.jpg"></a></div><br></div>The sunset </div><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div>Fowler Camping Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13717945451988708760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-798468118341438173.post-19044627591858480412014-07-25T16:16:00.001+02:002014-07-25T17:14:51.939+02:00Roadhouse rockNo internet connection yesterday folks, as we were out in the sticks. Having decided on a slight route change, we spent an extra morning at the beautiful Coral Bay and then headed out north east to Nanutarra Roadhouse. As well as providing essential refuelling for vehicles and their drivers, these roadhouses also offer (basic) overnight facilities for weary road train drivers and travellers alike. We pulled up alongside a friendly couple and their dog called Jack. The opening question around these parts is invariably: "you headin' north or south?". <div><br></div><div>There was more to this rocky outpost than first met the eye. Next to the highway runs the Ashburton river, and we caught a glimpse of it just as the sun was setting. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7ejZjUb0rBy0yfpIYzQv5G37XT64X7SP6vcMftA2W_KeUdjVDxpdTIgh94mnt73HKtQdCpCHuQWbQtdOJgpsJh-8Fu1a54J4lhAIk7AofbhYwH2QMY8FItXExuiOqs4ArQSEGQBiXWcw/s640/blogger-image--431571325.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7ejZjUb0rBy0yfpIYzQv5G37XT64X7SP6vcMftA2W_KeUdjVDxpdTIgh94mnt73HKtQdCpCHuQWbQtdOJgpsJh-8Fu1a54J4lhAIk7AofbhYwH2QMY8FItXExuiOqs4ArQSEGQBiXWcw/s640/blogger-image--431571325.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Ashburton River</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9hGIXWcoRPK8IxbOxXKfFP2fWc33htQPlsz_tZxix2Kms807JWPgevLn7svulUNenjBL8AgiwWLOVdNNuB9ZDTsCaoCHdnbaTfvgH2Mmpq6WfB2vGsWiwGuEgNCVrwGeOryxA2K7bGTM/s640/blogger-image--870578660.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9hGIXWcoRPK8IxbOxXKfFP2fWc33htQPlsz_tZxix2Kms807JWPgevLn7svulUNenjBL8AgiwWLOVdNNuB9ZDTsCaoCHdnbaTfvgH2Mmpq6WfB2vGsWiwGuEgNCVrwGeOryxA2K7bGTM/s640/blogger-image--870578660.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Black swans, the faunal emblem of Western Australia</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-sxsY69PLvAcdrOTzz-eDx2_91oszjfnF_uQlZtMsyY-0DYElFiIg8w-RfI5Yp-OHu2R-O_6SgDvlrFLxlX94_VjPgjbt9wjUBh0DFeABOXbhkx7Go9hv4ppZtKheyylGV4fiS8O6uo0/s640/blogger-image-8216888.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-sxsY69PLvAcdrOTzz-eDx2_91oszjfnF_uQlZtMsyY-0DYElFiIg8w-RfI5Yp-OHu2R-O_6SgDvlrFLxlX94_VjPgjbt9wjUBh0DFeABOXbhkx7Go9hv4ppZtKheyylGV4fiS8O6uo0/s640/blogger-image-8216888.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Road train </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8r42MoJ58hFCwiD4oArnbNDicn8q_61KG9PFy4KQLdmaP05NkAtjcVcmrKxuzxh6G2WDqDuF5cAtTVVn1w5774h6v2OL5L15mfoAKAlEWl-bNrQN3FTrwqbjC0pfYe0wqJ4aHv-lZpxs/s640/blogger-image--1810077636.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8r42MoJ58hFCwiD4oArnbNDicn8q_61KG9PFy4KQLdmaP05NkAtjcVcmrKxuzxh6G2WDqDuF5cAtTVVn1w5774h6v2OL5L15mfoAKAlEWl-bNrQN3FTrwqbjC0pfYe0wqJ4aHv-lZpxs/s640/blogger-image--1810077636.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Coral Bay - one-legged snorkelling </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAAZ3cNm2Hv4hcMk6CQO2ENoe5WQJ8TzaldJfXXBKk8pmbmJ8Lt_m7-_RwAgeQ4xi3vFoUTOVzg-XyoMLXr1C0_aAlFwANXYyn6I_JTKKayvkJmr_c_rGEvCXCVz__Pkcvi22_VDEVrU0/s640/blogger-image-792285637.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAAZ3cNm2Hv4hcMk6CQO2ENoe5WQJ8TzaldJfXXBKk8pmbmJ8Lt_m7-_RwAgeQ4xi3vFoUTOVzg-XyoMLXr1C0_aAlFwANXYyn6I_JTKKayvkJmr_c_rGEvCXCVz__Pkcvi22_VDEVrU0/s640/blogger-image-792285637.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">More of Coral Bay</div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div>Fowler Camping Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13717945451988708760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-798468118341438173.post-10052869739164047572014-07-23T14:20:00.001+02:002014-07-23T16:54:07.592+02:00Snorkelling around Ningaloo Reef (day 8 out of 24)Woke up to the usual dawn chorus and the smell of bacon. A universal camping fact: no matter how early you get up, there's always somebody already out there rustling up a cooked breakfast. <div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Today we went snorkelling around the easily accessible Ningaloo Reef in Coral Bay. A glass bottom boat took us to two of the "hotspots", from where we donned flippers and masks and plunged into the 22c water. Hannah and Ruby were well prepared, as they use snorkelling gear in their swimming classes and both swam like little fish today. The views were magnificent. We swam with fish of all shapes and sizes, including rather menacing looking "nor west" snappers. Our skipper told us about a famous large groper fish in the area nicknamed Merv, after Mervyn Hughes, the famous Australian fast bowler. The female has the ability to change sex to a male, so he was previously known as Mervette. </span></div><div><div><br></div><div>Unfortunately, no photos of the snorkelling as we were all in the water together. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4FVye51sCG0_d75GppgbiaZC0fSY3iQkrwejdrsy8MUu_Ktr7YSDjWHOYXUG1dk0aUU9uuCvlsXfBcQD-nP42zADJ2GGoNXWpOSRKhfh0ccmyrGiAo5Vv0Z9iuSCbHANoc7pjAXD8Z9s/s640/blogger-image--356820292.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4FVye51sCG0_d75GppgbiaZC0fSY3iQkrwejdrsy8MUu_Ktr7YSDjWHOYXUG1dk0aUU9uuCvlsXfBcQD-nP42zADJ2GGoNXWpOSRKhfh0ccmyrGiAo5Vv0Z9iuSCbHANoc7pjAXD8Z9s/s640/blogger-image--356820292.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div><br></div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div></div>Fowler Camping Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13717945451988708760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-798468118341438173.post-10526648109914362792014-07-22T16:16:00.001+02:002014-07-22T17:17:36.111+02:00Aboriginal culture and the Coffee Pot trainAfter spending the night at the quietest campsite ever, we headed off to visit Gwoonwardu Mia, also known as the Gascoyne Aboriginal Heritage and Cultural Centre. It tells the fascinating story of the Aboriginal people<span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> of the Gascoyne region, in their own words. After taking a ride on the Coffee Pot Train along the One Mile Jetty in Carnarvon, we hit the road to Coral Bay and the Ningaloo Reef. </span><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"> </span><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><br></font></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxUEAMgHQZP-LHuxtbXgGI5XZuT0O1bW5Tpc-8Tu6DpzxWVfogbu_Gg99Xw7KZPR0gdNw617VU5bi60GHk36K3bO2IvKWIK43r9_saNNYNhBXYNWVCXc9a3rPvwp3JUR_x_7mi9JuKzoE/s640/blogger-image--945548327.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; Well, we've had sunshine every day with temperatures around 19 to 21c. There was torrential rain in Perth on our second night and a brief shower this evening. So for the rainiest month of the year, we've been quite lucky. However, the days are short, with sunrise around 7am and sunset at 6pm. It gets quite chilly in the evenings and some nights have been uncomfortably cold, so we splashed out on some blankets to supplement our thin duvets. It will get warmer as we move further north (that just doesn't sound right!). </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">Meanwhile, back in Carnarvon, we set up camp for the night and had dinner in the communal kitchen. This is a great feature of Australian camping culture. Every campsite provides gas barbecues, stoves and a seating area. A good way to mingle with the neighbours and more convenient than cooking in the camper van, which can get a bit cramped. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5phz8lSTNwffcvydUxc2YH5pn_y5YvsJKuc_IocvMI1MavD7-3YlqoaSJ69h0b96ssETzgzlsVdWzoGsCnyLs8QRSn-ilabrnqZscK6UGbli624GR4SGmMshoZps1TWFoJMZ5cWI-uzE/s640/blogger-image--904894194.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5phz8lSTNwffcvydUxc2YH5pn_y5YvsJKuc_IocvMI1MavD7-3YlqoaSJ69h0b96ssETzgzlsVdWzoGsCnyLs8QRSn-ilabrnqZscK6UGbli624GR4SGmMshoZps1TWFoJMZ5cWI-uzE/s640/blogger-image--904894194.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Feeding the dolphins in Monkey Mia</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2kmgCdSncxfgWox-Ltc_wAA4kT5xtsZhIJFHJR0QIPOMptUUuu0kfQGKS6XJpXfsPFxLPkNLToqIK5v9gE2S5-zmXYG36MzUpB9otKb6JatptvqCti_8wO1x_udbSh_RWCp5wqhPEV5E/s640/blogger-image-536032114.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2kmgCdSncxfgWox-Ltc_wAA4kT5xtsZhIJFHJR0QIPOMptUUuu0kfQGKS6XJpXfsPFxLPkNLToqIK5v9gE2S5-zmXYG36MzUpB9otKb6JatptvqCti_8wO1x_udbSh_RWCp5wqhPEV5E/s640/blogger-image-536032114.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">En-route to Carnarvon</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdOXMTPZH_5f23SVZrmbsaUWPsY_zL_ujMpgCqYyNmCYin-pF0Z_CBaqineFH5jhQq_wOWazB4E2EQUY2aMcOuUk-njPqoFyGiVorsEBB4xO8axCDlQvcZQZ8vHyUbqUq0eTWQXyrwMcM/s640/blogger-image-1212271314.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdOXMTPZH_5f23SVZrmbsaUWPsY_zL_ujMpgCqYyNmCYin-pF0Z_CBaqineFH5jhQq_wOWazB4E2EQUY2aMcOuUk-njPqoFyGiVorsEBB4xO8axCDlQvcZQZ8vHyUbqUq0eTWQXyrwMcM/s640/blogger-image-1212271314.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Bananas! Up at 7am to see the dolphins and this time, bingo. They came up really close to the shore, as they have apparently been doing every morning for the last x years. There were a lot of spectators and a guide with a microphone, which gave it a bit of an "aquarium show" feeling. But it was still amazing to see wild dolphins so close up. <div><br></div><div>After breakfast, we boarded the "Shotover"catamaran for a sailing and wildlife spotting excursion around Shark Bay. We saw more dolphins plus cormorants, gannets and a loggerhead turtle. The trip was worth it just for the sailing, let alone all the wonderful sights. </div><div><br></div><div>We rounded off the day with dinner and a show: a great guitarist and didgeridoo player called Fingers Mitchell Cullen, playing an interesting mix of folk and slide guitar and a triple set of didgeridoos. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8SOtHaVxFNjJP7FMrRKwbEcTtLtZYk_SGLiQjizO2LYPcX3SRpK-dmW9G3Ytx7ddVytoOMksrefvI7MWfbji4vlDXD768a_UQvGfcoy8ogbQtGNDxvAh0rXw_VYWLoUQ_7ruGZXyIxRw/s640/blogger-image-523293327.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8SOtHaVxFNjJP7FMrRKwbEcTtLtZYk_SGLiQjizO2LYPcX3SRpK-dmW9G3Ytx7ddVytoOMksrefvI7MWfbji4vlDXD768a_UQvGfcoy8ogbQtGNDxvAh0rXw_VYWLoUQ_7ruGZXyIxRw/s640/blogger-image-523293327.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ2HaV8jhe3d_J6EgQMBr_CpiFxvPkP7MAJwJsq9bLA3VheaguJim6nnVuiVTiGUFg07mTM7bsQ4slXBau3ljKKMIC3LztJKlzhzB9pfXanYtcEF9GxZRDSLBfYFQNQKjvFYTdSQFLZqE/s640/blogger-image--1585655096.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZ2HaV8jhe3d_J6EgQMBr_CpiFxvPkP7MAJwJsq9bLA3VheaguJim6nnVuiVTiGUFg07mTM7bsQ4slXBau3ljKKMIC3LztJKlzhzB9pfXanYtcEF9GxZRDSLBfYFQNQKjvFYTdSQFLZqE/s640/blogger-image--1585655096.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">A pelican. There's more of a feeling of remoteness now, with long, winding roads, no towns and very few places to take a break. We eventually stopped at the Billabong Roadhouse, which was like something out of a movie: squeaky signpost flapping in the wind, tumbleweed drifting past and characterful staff. Another 2 hours of driving and we finally arrived at Monkey Mia Nature Resort. Hoping to see some dolphins tomorrow.<div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqnlv2Z5hOp6DvlgUBXjrg5kzw4eT6bUzLfXwWbroUdKAiFdxrbTTGCMX_nJVXzK63xmGkJMPfmc9-uB2AZl7S2PYPkN-_w8I2aZ8dr3mgkLGjuU4qxWqemazATiCREBPmWHZbmCrA4Cg/s640/blogger-image-374579830.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiqnlv2Z5hOp6DvlgUBXjrg5kzw4eT6bUzLfXwWbroUdKAiFdxrbTTGCMX_nJVXzK63xmGkJMPfmc9-uB2AZl7S2PYPkN-_w8I2aZ8dr3mgkLGjuU4qxWqemazATiCREBPmWHZbmCrA4Cg/s640/blogger-image-374579830.jpg"></a></div><br><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmjpFViH3M3oDBFj-odYipKpadvygjPJWIGwq2uJQ7T5JbEJ0Vlt9qF1YaTrYTTAi_UhmuqFP71uYA0LswTaJQZxLXzd_LYlpiVt8M99AdzyRDA7ZS8mLLcIpIMHjXC7OMmWeXpIdPsL8/s640/blogger-image--943243142.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmjpFViH3M3oDBFj-odYipKpadvygjPJWIGwq2uJQ7T5JbEJ0Vlt9qF1YaTrYTTAi_UhmuqFP71uYA0LswTaJQZxLXzd_LYlpiVt8M99AdzyRDA7ZS8mLLcIpIMHjXC7OMmWeXpIdPsL8/s640/blogger-image--943243142.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Shark Bay</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibJwlUohSu7pZ9ex49CrpXwINhE-4hZ7Jhyphenhyphenv7Ik1UHgP2R0RtamOwosfHQTQfjbTTNXmEP0UQpuJm7EzJfPeokex-UhEgyCwydFXGYesyuCCN3PDNO7qkrUK6C7bJPN53jSIWasp9JLQM/s640/blogger-image-625138422.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibJwlUohSu7pZ9ex49CrpXwINhE-4hZ7Jhyphenhyphenv7Ik1UHgP2R0RtamOwosfHQTQfjbTTNXmEP0UQpuJm7EzJfPeokex-UhEgyCwydFXGYesyuCCN3PDNO7qkrUK6C7bJPN53jSIWasp9JLQM/s640/blogger-image-625138422.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Our catamaran for tomorrow's Dolphin spotting trip</div><br><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div></div></div>Fowler Camping Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13717945451988708760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-798468118341438173.post-35385845898684342312014-07-18T16:40:00.001+02:002014-07-18T16:40:54.335+02:00Pelican briefUp at the crack of dawn (alright, 8am) for the daily pelican feeding show down by the riverside. We got an interesting intro from the local pelican expert, but unfortunately the main act didn't show up owing to family commitments (breeding season). So it was back to the camp for toasted muffins and scrambers, followed by a bike tour along the coastal path. It's a stunning coastline, with big rollers breaking over the reef at the mouth of the Murchison River. Dinner at the communal barbie rounded off a lovely relaxing day. <div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEaL-6LDGC2RgjfkiTw4z7VtmNTA7QZdxBk8fpcwLQ-NljxYqek_kJAoot5oBblI8Bil1T1RG54df6-xhBI-BcKcS402Wc5H8ZMz0_OHOwVCgU3BD67L_ObAx96DODDMq3u5SpI194eLc/s640/blogger-image--1739243194.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEaL-6LDGC2RgjfkiTw4z7VtmNTA7QZdxBk8fpcwLQ-NljxYqek_kJAoot5oBblI8Bil1T1RG54df6-xhBI-BcKcS402Wc5H8ZMz0_OHOwVCgU3BD67L_ObAx96DODDMq3u5SpI194eLc/s640/blogger-image--1739243194.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVHJXYLvGnbUF64vSIcotp23dlgsxzKNGk8y2F8Grot9ukNyRhHALhb0Zam-7za28T3ssXH5D8DNCE6xDRyFj3SBUev3HVuV7o5j0aeRwyvQlQTyOYCqEDT0n9n5yFUOmpM1tze3A0av8/s640/blogger-image-1987649594.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVHJXYLvGnbUF64vSIcotp23dlgsxzKNGk8y2F8Grot9ukNyRhHALhb0Zam-7za28T3ssXH5D8DNCE6xDRyFj3SBUev3HVuV7o5j0aeRwyvQlQTyOYCqEDT0n9n5yFUOmpM1tze3A0av8/s640/blogger-image-1987649594.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG3deWLIEdiYnq-blD7UJ0CablefYElGj7LvQdHpGA83WdrVLnfWUUEk6EMkC8fx0iJiru1bbycDCTuklWXIUfUpz_CCto7UyegokF3Bu1YHZ9wFqv6Am8y1Nli3Y70nmzSi907M15lzU/s640/blogger-image--646752278.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG3deWLIEdiYnq-blD7UJ0CablefYElGj7LvQdHpGA83WdrVLnfWUUEk6EMkC8fx0iJiru1bbycDCTuklWXIUfUpz_CCto7UyegokF3Bu1YHZ9wFqv6Am8y1Nli3Y70nmzSi907M15lzU/s640/blogger-image--646752278.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmdAB92ieYRe022052NTdeVfYvfTb7ED3SfknK6ny-RpSUnzXNNi_LK4YCzXp6pbP7ukclcDg2hoGiGpUtLb8Yur3czQsKHDzspO8TKeXd6BXNzYD7Z45QgKm77BhTEGE57vLNhZaumko/s640/blogger-image-259181145.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmdAB92ieYRe022052NTdeVfYvfTb7ED3SfknK6ny-RpSUnzXNNi_LK4YCzXp6pbP7ukclcDg2hoGiGpUtLb8Yur3czQsKHDzspO8TKeXd6BXNzYD7Z45QgKm77BhTEGE57vLNhZaumko/s640/blogger-image-259181145.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLg3xL246_NAWysl-LbZAWIr3aTAGnhBMMq-HDm7Xel4MafamPVPeCfn3mCPE_bvxuAK4ZjiD1DaChuD7vOveTSlC-ORMTLMgdAt7PDPyRMZUa8cAISIBhuiZbA3nWHwzJ4RQMkyDVwms/s640/blogger-image--792531973.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLg3xL246_NAWysl-LbZAWIr3aTAGnhBMMq-HDm7Xel4MafamPVPeCfn3mCPE_bvxuAK4ZjiD1DaChuD7vOveTSlC-ORMTLMgdAt7PDPyRMZUa8cAISIBhuiZbA3nWHwzJ4RQMkyDVwms/s640/blogger-image--792531973.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div><br></div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><br></div><br><div><br></div><div><br></div></div>Fowler Camping Adventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13717945451988708760noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-798468118341438173.post-25971262615976814802014-07-17T16:52:00.001+02:002014-07-17T16:52:26.950+02:00Cervantes, Kangaroos and KalbarriBusy day yesterday. After vacating the apartment, picking up the camper van and raiding the local IGA supermarket, we set off north to Cervantes and our first stop over. The camper is enormous compared to what we're used to at home and has all the luxuries: bathroom with shower, microwave, airconditioning and buckets of storage space (but sadly, no Nespresso coffee machine!). The roads so far have been mainly single lane highways with a speed limit of 110 km/h and very little traffic. <div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">After a very chilly first night, we visited the famous Pinnacles in Nambung National Park, an expanse of limestone pillars originally formed underground and since uncovered by the south-westerly winds. On the walk there, we came face to face with a group of kangaroos bouncing around in the bushes. A welcome sight after all the promises we'd made to Hannah and Ruby. </span></div><div><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif">Continuing along the scenic Indian Ocean Drive, we arrived at Kalbarri where we will spend the next 2 nights. </font></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><br></font></div><div><font face="Helvetica Neue Light, HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjySAidgGO_igyhCSzECGvXZqI_VI62Pz9b4vkuP3Q75gqG91wBxeHXrCzvuRfqgICgBKbw_r4HgZR-EHpJMLJc-SCcWfMpkezQnpSyeVOuundwp99qOUCas1SW_Hg5iEwlCMzQc7eRWHQ/s640/blogger-image--496620477.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; A few reflections on the world's remotest city and first impressions of Australian life, before we embark on our journey to Darwin:</div><div><br></div><div>Hannah: it's warm for winter. I don't understand everything they say. The food tastes different. Loved the Bell Tower and Kings Park. </div><div><br></div><div>Ruby: I like the way they speak English. Loved the adventure playground in Kings Park. The milk tastes funny. Nice dresses in the shops. </div><div><br></div><div>Grit: the architecture reminds me of the UK, and Basingstoke in particular. Not much wildlife around and not one cat or dog seen. Lovely friendly people. </div><div><br></div><div>David: friendly, engaging people. Excellent local produce. Loved the vibrant atmosphere of Fremantle. Jet lag starting to take its toll on Grit and me, but Hannah and Ruby are sleeping well. Took a ferry across the river to Perth City centre and visited the modern looking Swan Bell Tower. The bells come from St Martin-in-the-Fields church in Trafalgar Square, London and the tower was especially designed to allow close up viewing of the bell ringers. We took part in an interactive ringing session, led by the matronly "Auntie Laura", and we all managed to keep our feet on the floor. </div></div><div><br></div><div>After visiting the Western Australia state library, we stumbled on an outdoor ice skating rink, packed with winter-clad skaters circling in front of a giant screen showing Paris in the snow.
